Sabeel meeting – Kairos Moment

13/08/2015 – 10:55   from Denys de la Hoyde

Dear Friends
In December 2009 leading Palestinian Christians launched a document called A Moment of Truth: A word of faith, hope and love from the heart of Palestinian suffering. This became known as the Kairos Palestine document. Kairos is a Greek word which means ‘a critical moment in time’.

Two years later 60 Christians from 15 countries, representing diverse traditions, gathered in Bethlehem to affirm the document with its urgent question: “Are you able to help us to get our freedom back?” The resulting “Bethlehem Call” initiated a global movement for justice.

At Pentecost 2012 a group of Christians from a variety of theological and church traditions met on the Hebridean island of Iona to engage with the Kairos Document. They produced “The Iona Call”, which concludes with the words:

“Difficult though the journey may be, we seize the kairos moment with conviction and hope. We recognise our responsibility as followers of Jesus Christ to speak the prophetic word with courage.”

The Sabeel Yorkshire Group will be holding a training day for all those wanting to learn more about the Kairos movement for justice in Palestine . This will take place on Wednesday 30 September, from 2-6pm at Mill Hill Unitarian Chapel, City Square , Leeds .  [See the attached flyer]

The afternoon will include an introductory film to Kairos Palestine, an overview of the history of the Kairos Britain movement, analysis of the situation in Palestine and Israel , and workshops on taking action (including campaigning with Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions and getting your church involved).

We are delighted that Rev Brian Brown will also be joining us to speak about his personal experience of campaigning during South African Apartheid, and how we can use BDS [Boycott Divestment Sanctions] as a tool for non-violent creative resistance to the occupation.

Canon Naim Ateek (Founder and Director of Sabeel) says:

“We as Palestinians are daily humiliated by the Israeli forces; our human rights are violated daily ; our homes are demolished daily by bulldozers manufactured in the US; our olive trees are uprooted on a daily basis; our land is confiscated and turned over into illegal settlements daily; our young people languish in Israeli jails with no legal charges or due process for months on end; our teenagers are taken from their beds in the middle of the night and imprisoned by the Israeli army on an average of two a night; and the Israeli government continues its daily violations of international law while the nations of the world remain silent. Is this not a Kairos moment for the church to speak a prophetic word of justice?”

In peace,   Denys
