BBC. Egyptian authorities are questioning an Israeli journalist who allegedly attempted to illegally cross the border into Israel with an African migrant. Yotam Feldman was arrested on Sunday with a Ghanaian man in the Sinai peninsula.

He was apparently working on an assignment for an Israeli TV channel about illegal immigration.

He injured his hand on barbed wire and treated in hospital, before he was questioned by military interrogators.

They were suspicious of his explanation, AFP news agency reported.

‘Safe return’

Israel’s Channel 10 television had called for his release, confirming that he was working on a report for them.

The Haaretz newspaper said Feldman had taken unpaid leave from the Israeli paper for 10 days to carry out the TV assignment.

“To the best of our knowledge, Feldman was working on a report for another media outlet. We hope for and expect his safe return soon,” the paper said in a statement.

Egypt has come under pressure from Israeli authorities to clamp down on illegal migrant traffic through the porous border.

More than 13,000 people have managed to make the journey since 2006.
